THE LETTERS
Dear Fly Girl,
You are beautiful and whether you know it or not, you’re God’s masterpiece. There is no one like you. In fact, no one else has your fingerprints. You were made in the image of God.
The world will label you and try to limit you, but it’s important that you believe in yourself. Stay away from negative people who will drain you of your energy. Remember you are the prize and you don’t need to settle for less than you deserve. Keep your eyes on the prize and aim high.
Affirm yourself everyday by looking in the mirror and speak these words over yourself:
❤️ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
❤️ I will not allow anyone to define me, because God already has.
❤️ I am unstoppable..
Last but not least, pray and ask God for guidance and trust that he’ll direct your path.
My dear Fly Girl, you are beautiful and you matter.
Believe it!❤️
Be Blessed,
Katherine
Dear FLY Girl,
There's a LOT happening right now; the world feels crazy, school is getting harder, and sometimes there's no one to talk to. I want you to know that it gets better! There are people who love you and care about you and want you to succeed. Don't let anyone or anything keep you from being you; you are beautiful and wonderfully made! There's a big world out there and it's waiting for YOU to explore and shine and make a difference. So, don't give up. Keep living, one day at a time and when it feels too hard, remember that you are loved and you matter!
Dear Fly Girl,
I need you to read every single word of this letter — because someone who has walked the path ahead of you wrote it just for you.
At 13, the world can feel so loud. Everybody seems to have an opinion about how you should look, how you should talk, how much space you should take up. Let me tell you something they forgot to say: you are allowed to take up every bit of space you need. Your laughter, your questions, your ideas, your big dreams — they belong in every room you walk into.
Being a Black girl in Tennessee — in America — means you carry something powerful. You come from women who survived the unsurvivable and still found a way to create beauty, community, and joy. That strength isn't a burden. It is your inheritance. And it lives in you right now, even on the hard days when you can't feel it.
There will be moments when someone overlooks you, underestimates you, or makes you feel like you have to prove yourself just to be seen. You don't owe anyone your shrinking. You are not "too much." You are not "too loud." You are not "too anything." The right people will never need you to be less than you are.
Your mind is a gift. Protect it. Feed it. Take school seriously — not because someone is watching — but because knowledge is the one thing no one can ever take from you. Read everything. Ask questions, especially the ones that feel "too big." Dream without apology.
And on the days when you look in the mirror and the world's noise tries to creep in — I need you to say this out loud:
"I am brilliant. I am worthy of love and belonging — exactly as I am. My Blackness is beautiful. My voice matters. I come from power, and I am going somewhere great. The world needs what only I can bring to it."
Say it until you believe it. Say it when you don't feel it. Say it because it is the truth, whether the world confirms it today or not.
You are not behind. You are not broken. You are not alone. There is a whole community of women — women like me — who are rooting for you so hard it would take your breath away.
We see you. We were you. And we cannot wait to see what you do with your one incredible life.
With so much love,
A Woman Who Believes in You
Dear FLY Girl,
You are worthy of love simply because you exist. You do not have to earn it; it is simply your birthright. While you are the light of the world, ensure that you are your own light first. When you shine, everyone's path behind and around you also becomes illuminated. You are accomplishing amazing things in life, but never allow your identity and self-worth to be reduced to those accomplishments. You are a whole person beyond what you can do for others and the world at large. You have the right to bodily autonomy and you get to name and exercise those boundaries right now. You have the right to dream and, in order to do that, you need your rest. Practice giving your body and mind the rest it deserves now so that you are not waiting for others to give you permission to rest in your adult years. You are uniquely positioned to be possibility models for Black women. Take your seat on the throne and show us what's possible for us by your example.
With So Much Love,
Francesca
Dear fly girl, always stand confident in who you are. Never let ANYONE dim the light that you deserve to shine. Always remember your skin is beautiful, your hair, your culture and most importantly YOU. Always be unapologetically yourself, no matter what anyone says because individuality makes you stand out in a world of many people who are scared to stand out.
Dear Fly Black Girl,
I hope you know how powerful you are. The world might not always say it out loud, but your strength, your mind, and your presence matter more than you realize. Don’t shrink yourself to make other people comfortable. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep believing in what’s possible for your life.
You deserve good things, real love, real opportunities, and the space to become everything you were meant to be. Be kind to yourself and speak life and love into your own heart constantly.
Dear Fly Girl,
Girl do you know how amazing you are? I know the noise of friends, social media, family, and so many adults sometimes is louder than your own voice but take time to quiet the noise and listen from within. I’m sure you will here:
You are Amazing
You are Smart
You Deserve PEACE, LOVE, and JOY
You are Capable of creating your own PEACE, LOVE, and JOU
You are Beautiful You are Bold and ain’t nothing wrong with that. For those whom feel like you too much - that’s their problem or yours. You are exactly who you are supposed to be.
When life feels too much and overwhelming, go to your safe space and take 5 deep breathes and say this mantra.
I AM WORTHY OF ALL MY DREAMS AND DESIRES AND I WILL ACHIEVE THEM.
LOVE YOU but more importantly YOU LOVE YOU!
Dear Fly Girl. I was once 13 and hard headed which led me to destruction and a chance to change my life and become the strong independent black woman I am today.Loyalty and Honesty will carry you to Infinity.Be Blessed Be Aware and most of all God Loves you and I do to.
Hey beautiful black girl!
Walking to every room with your head held high. Chin up. Shoulders back. Relax. You are worthy and you matter. I would be lying to you if u said that live doesn’t come with challenges. It does. You are more than capable of navigating them. Cry if you need to. Reach out if it gets heavy. Your life is precious and it deserves to be preserved. Do you know the lineage that you derive from? Inventors, disruptors, leaders.. you come from from rich soil. Keep planting your seeds. The harvest may not come quickly, it will soon arrive. Be patient. Love yourself in the meantime.
We are here for you, no matter the day or hour. You are loved and cherish.
The world is yours!
My Dear Beautiful Black Girl,
I want you to pause for a moment and breathe in this truth: you are beautifully and wonderfully made, just as the Creator designed you to be. There is nothing accidental or ordinary about you. Your presence carries purpose, your voice carries power, and your spirit carries light.
As you grow, you’ll discover that the world will try to tell you who to be, how to act, or what lane to stay in. But I want you to remember this: your uniqueness is your strength. Walk boldly and unapologetically in it. Lead with confidence when your heart calls you to lead and follow with wisdom when it’s time to learn. Both are signs of strength, not weakness. Trust me, you’ll know the difference.
Hold tight to your faith. It will steady you when life feels uncertain and lift you when you feel weary. Never give up on yourself or the dreams planted inside you. Even when the path feels long or lonely, keep moving. You are never walking alone. Remember, great things come with time.
Surround yourself with people who speak life into you; people who celebrate your victories, support your growth, and protect your peace. Find your safe place, or your safe person, where you can rest, breathe, and be fully yourself without fear or judgment. This here is self-care and self-love.
Your words have power…REAL POWER! They can heal, uplift, inspire, and transform. Use them wisely. Speak life into others and most importantly speak life into yourself. We are here to remind you of that as well.
And hear me clearly: you should never be mishandled, disrespected, or taken advantage of. Your heart, your mind, your body, your dreams…they are precious. Protect them. Set boundaries without apology. Tolerating mistreatment is not an option for someone as valuable as you. Remember what I said, find your safe place/person should you find yourself in a predicament.
I want you to know something else, something I hope you carry with you always: I am in your corner. WE are in your corner. Cheering for you. Believing in you. Supporting you. You never have to face this world alone.
Shine bright, beautiful girl. The world needs the light only you can give.
With love and unwavering belief in you,
Jess
Dear Beautiful Fly Girl,
You are more than enough! You are worthy! You are brave! You are loved! Please know that whatever problem you face today, you can and will make it. Trouble doesn't last always. The sun will shine again. You can do anything you put your mind to. Love yourself more each day! If I could go back, I would tell my teenage self, it will get better. It will get easier. What is for me is for me in its own timing. I will not compare my life to others but love the period I'm in. Be yourself, not who anyone wants you to be. You are a leader! You are courageous. You are loved!
Dear Fly Girl,
Keep your crown up. Take it one day at a time. Life may always throw you curve balls but remember who you are as a black woman. Capable of so much. Love yourself and let others love on you!
Dear Beautiful Young Queen,
I want you to always remember this—there is nothing about you that needs fixing. You were created with purpose, with power, and with a beauty that goes far beyond what the world sometimes tries to define. Loving yourself is not always easy, especially when voices around you may try to tell you who you should be. But your greatest strength will come from knowing who you are. Your hair, your skin, your voice, your thoughts—every part of you is worthy, valuable, and enough just as it is. There will be days when you doubt yourself. On those days, I want you to stand a little taller and remind yourself: I am strong. I am capable. I am deserving of love—especially from myself. Take time to pour into you. Speak kindly to yourself. Protect your peace. Dream boldly. And never shrink to make others comfortable. The way you love yourself will teach the world how to love you. So love yourself fully, loudly, and without apology. You are powerful. You are beautiful. You are more than enough.
With love and encouragement,
Dr. Amanda
You are wonderfully and fearfully made. You are who you were meant to be. You have a purpose other wise you wouldn't be where you are right now. Believe in yourself, follow your goals and dreams. Remember that mistakes are lessons to be learned. Pick your self up and try again. Stay positive!!!
Dear Fly Girl,
I know some days feel heavy, like you’re trying your best and it’s still not enough but it is. You are.
You don’t have to change who you are to be liked. The right people will see you, love you, and stay.
It’s okay to cry, it’s okay to not understand everything yet. You’re still learning, still growing, and that’s exactly where you’re supposed to be.
One day, you’re going to look in the mirror and be so proud of the girl you didn’t give up on.
Keep going .
1. You Are Enough Right now, exactly as you are, you are enough. You don’t need to change your personality or your look to fit a certain mold. You’re already the "main character" of your own story.
2. Choose Your Circle Wisely The people you hang out with matter. Try to surround yourself with friends who make good choices and—this is the big one—actually want to see you win. If someone feels threatened by your success, they probably shouldn't have a front-row seat in your life.
3. Trust Your Gut You have a built-in compass called intuition. Learn to listen to it. If a situation feels "off," it probably is. Try not to let yourself be easily swayed by what everyone else is doing; standing your ground is a superpower.
4. Protect Your Secrets Be discerning about who you trust. Here’s a little secret about secrets: A person who gossips to you about others will almost always gossip to others about you. Keep your private business for the people who have truly earned your trust.
You’ve got this. Middle school is just a short chapter, and you are going to survive it beautifully.
Dear Fly Girl!
You are gonna make it! You are beautiful and unique. You are amazing and needed! Don’t give up! You are and will be enough!!! You are me and I am you!!! Keep FLYing!
Dear FLY girl,
Remember to stay courageous, compassionate, and creative. Even if it does not look like it right now, you are a light.
Dear Black Girl,
You are powerful beyond measure. The world may not always see your light, but please remember—it shines brightly, even on the hardest days. Your skin tells a story rich with pride, your voice carries strength even when it trembles, and your dreams are valid simply because they’re yours.
Never let anyone convince you that you’re too much or not enough. The truth is, you are exactly right. You come from a legacy of resilience and brilliance, and every time you show up as yourself, you honor those who came before you.
Take up space. Speak your truth. Chase your dreams with confidence, knowing that you are loved, capable, and destined for great things. The world needs your magic—don’t ever dim it.
With love and pride,
Aaliyah Brown 💕
Dear FLY girl, I may never be able to relate to you fully but I hear you and I see you. Do not dim your light, you are strong, beautiful, and capable. Keep doing you, you’re the future, be FLY.
Dear FLY Girl,
I am so proud of you. You are intelligent, beautiful, strong, resilient, and a difference maker. Your impact on this world is far greater than you could ever imagine. Through the tough times, I encourage you to remain steadfast, motivated, and unapologetically yourself. You matter. You are special. I am so happy you are here. I know it feels like there is a pressure to be perfect and constantly extraordinary. This seems like a difficult task, but if you remain genuine and authentic, you are more perfect and treasured than you know. Read this letter when you need a reminder that you are loved and someone is proud of you because I am amazed.
Sincerely, Your friend
Dear Fly girl,
You are worth it, you are valid and you represent strength in all you do.
Dear Fly Girl,
There is only one you in this world. No one else can do or be just like you so shine girl! You deserve to be celebrated and supported. The world needs you to keep shining so do not let anyone steal your joy.
Dear FLY Girl,
Hey you. Yes you. I see you. I see the way you move through the world. Your curiosity, your energy, your passion. I know sometimes life feels heavy, and people may not always recognize your magic, but I’m here to tell you that your voice, your laughter, your style, your ideas, your EVERYTHING matters.
You are allowed to be loud, soft, messy-brilliant and everything in between. Don’t shrink yourself to make someone else comfortable. Your joy is valid and POWERFUL. Your way of moving is exactly what we need in this world.
Mistakes? You’ll make plenty. And that’s okay! Each one teaches you something about your boundaries, strengths, and about you. You don’t have to be perfect. Just be you.
Remember to celebrate yourself every chance you get. Sing your favorite songs, dance when no one’s watching (and when they are!), speak your mind, take up space unapologetically. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and see your light, and don’t be afraid to let go of those who dim it.
Always carry your joy like a crown. It’s not just for you! It’s a gift for anyone lucky enough to be near you. You’re capable. You’re seen. You’re fly.
With love,
Your Older Self
Dear FLY Girl,
You're doing amazing sweetie. Like soooo good! I'm so proud of the way that you continue to push through. You've won so many battles, both that people see and don't see, and you still stand strong.
Continue to put your best foot forward in all that you do and never forget to take the time to love on YOU. Continue to make your presence known, take up space in this world, and let people know exactly who you are. Your purpose is divine, your joy is whimsical, everything you do is magic, and everything you touch is blessed and destined for greatness.
Go out there and let these people know!
You got this boo!
Dear future leader, educator, creator, or whatever you dream to be,
You are strong and resilient, but you also deserve to be vulnerable and supported by others. You are smart and wise, but you are allowed to be wrong and not know everything. You are talented and creative, but you are not defined by your work. You are kind and empathetic, but you are allowed to be selfish. You are allowed to be a burden to those that care about you. Let your actions define you, not what others say. You can make your own definition of success.
Im proud of you.
You got this!
FROM UNKNOWN SENDERS
Dear Black Girl,
Hi girl. My message may not be so soft and sweet, but it comes from a place of reality and care.
In this world where everything can be accessed with just a click of a finger, I would say this: make your heart thicker than before. Thicker in a way that knows how to analyze life. Life is not always as good and sweet as we think. We cannot control what people throw at us, but we can control how we react.
Life has never been easy, so let’s not expect it to always be easy either. Be tough, girl. But at the same time, be gentle with yourself. Be easy on yourself. If you ever feel like no one loves you, always remember that you have yourself and you have the Lord. Keep yourself up, and always look up to the Lord.
You are stronger than you think.
Dear FLY Girl,
If no one has told you this lately, let me be the one to say it clearly:
You are not behind.
You are not too much.
You are not invisible.
You are not a problem to solve.
You are becoming.
At 13, the world can feel loud. People start placing expectations on you: how you should act, how you should look, how mature you should be. Sometimes, as a young Black girl, the world may expect you to grow up faster, be stronger, be quieter, be tougher.
But here is what I wish someone had told me:
You are allowed to be soft.
You are allowed to be silly.
You are allowed to dream without explaining why.
You are allowed to enjoy the whimsy of childhood for as long as it lives inside you.
Please, hold onto your wonder.
Laugh loudly.
Make up stories.
Read books that make you feel like magic is real.
Dance in your room.
Ask questions about everything.
Stay forever curious.
Curiosity will take you places confidence alone cannot. It will help you see opportunities where others see limits. It will help you build, create, lead, and reimagine the world in your own way.
There may be moments when you feel different. When you feel underestimated. When you wonder if you’re “enough.”
Let me answer that now: You are enough before you prove anything.
Strength does not mean never crying. It does not mean having all the answers. Real strength is trusting yourself enough to say, “I don’t know yet, but I will figure it out.”
And you will.
You will figure out your voice.
You will figure out your path.
You will figure out who deserves to be in your life.
You will figure out how to turn confusion into clarity.
It won’t all happen at once. That’s okay. You are not meant to have life solved at 13. You are meant to explore it.
Protect your joy, your imagination, and your right to grow at your own pace.
One day, you will look back and realize that the very things that made you feel different are the same things that make you powerful. Your perspective. Your resilience. Your creativity. Your empathy. Your brilliance.
So here is my greatest advice:
Enjoy this season.
Stay curious.
Be brave enough to be yourself even when that self is still unfolding.
And trust deeply that you will find your way.
Because you will.
With belief in you,
Someone who wishes she heard these words at 13
You are awesome!
Dear FLY girl,
How beautiful you are for just being you. May you never let society and the world define who you are. Be you, and be bold. Share your kindness and love to those around you. The world is lucky to have you, and you matter. You are powerful and resilient, even on days you do not feel that way. Surround yourself with positive supports and people you love to be your strength when you feel low. You are so loved!
Dear FLY Girl,
Know that you are loved and so special! Some things I wish I heard in my teen years are: it’s very hard being a teen, and it’s okay to make mistakes. You’re not supposed to know everything, and each day you show up is a win. Be patient with yourself. Keep your girls by your side. You’re awesome.
